The Year of the Wood Snake.

Updated: Jan 15

In Chinese Medicine, we base a lot of our diagnosis and decision-making on Yin and Yang and the 5 elements theory, but these concepts go way beyond the medical field. These theories were created by observing all natural phenomena and they are incorporated into our daily lives. On January 29th, 2025 we are entering the Year of the Wood Snake, and the snake officially emerges on February 3rd (the beginning of the Chinese Solar New Year). The Snake is the sixth animal of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac.

Each year of the Chinese calendar is interpreted based on:

  • 12 earthly branches and the animal associated with it

  • 10 heavenly stems

  • Yin or Yang of the earthly branch and the heavenly stem

  • 5 elements of the earthly branch and heavenly stem

Let’s take a look at 2025

This year’s earthly branch is 巳 Si. Si is the sixth branch in a 12-year cycle because, according to legend, the Snake completed the race to the emperor behind the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon. Si is not just a year, it also describes a month, a day, and the time of the day. Its corresponding time is 9 am – 11 am and its month is May, when nature is going into a full bloom. Therefore, the Year of the Snake calls for maturity and growth, urging us to step into responsibility and tackle our tasks with diligence and thoroughness.

Snake possesses wisdom, creativity, and charm. Snake is a Yin animal but belongs to the Fire element. Yin energy is mysterious and internal. As a Yin animal, Snake likes to rest in stillness but can strike quickly when needed. Positive traits of the Snake include intelligence, excellent instincts, adaptability, and a willingness to find common ground through compromise. The Fire element, however, can sometimes manifest as an insatiable craving for more, leading to a sense of dissatisfaction. To control this, it is essential to cultivate harmony and fully appreciate the present moment, rather than constantly chasing adrenaline and excitement. This year emphasizes the importance of creating a strategic plan and applying consistent effort to achieve your goals. The Snake’s ability to shed its skin symbolizes reflection on the past and transformative growth toward the future.

Snake is characterized by creativity and intellect, making it a favorable year for teaching, design, and innovation. As a result, individuals working in these fields are poised to achieve notable success this year. The Fire element also encourages joyful travel, so be sure to set aside time for an adventurous vacation.

2025’s heavenly stem is Yi. representing Yin Wood. Yin Wood symbolizes delicate and flexible plants like vines, flowers, and small trees, which exhibit resilience and adaptability even in challenging conditions. This refined energy contrasts with the robust Yang Wood of 2024, offering an opportunity for gentler growth and creative expression.

The cosmic energy of the heavenly stems, representing atmospheric forces, is stronger than the earthly branches, allowing Wood to dominate Fire energetically. Wind, the climatic force associated with Wood, may bring an increased risk of dust storms and tornadoes in 2025. The Yang Fire energy of the Snake signifies the onset of summer, marked by growth, expansion, and dry heat. This weather pattern, known as Jue Yin, reflects transformative changes. While the Yin energy of the year may help balance these extreme conditions, challenges such as wildfires, droughts, and power grid stress remain possible. Staying hydrated and conserving resources will be crucial.

Earthly branches and heavenly stems are paired based on their Yin and Yang nature. As Si and Yi are numbered 6 & 2, which are even numbers, they belong to Yin. Yin is associated with tranquility, rest, contemplation, and reserve – which allows you to balance the forward momentum of the Snake.

5 elements theory

Yi is linked to the Wood element in the 5- elements theory, while Si is linked to the Fire. According to the Five Elements theory, Wood generates Fire, suggesting that 2025 will be a harmonious year of natural synergy and growth. To maximize this energy, embrace playfulness and creativity to prevent the stagnation of Wood energy, which could otherwise lead to frustration or irritability.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the organ associated with the Snake is the small intestine. This organ separates the clear from the turbid, both physically and metaphorically. To support its function, opt for light, vegetable-rich meals and incorporate grains, sweet spices, root vegetables, honey, chicken, and fruit into your diet. Avoid mucus-producing foods like raw or cold dishes, dairy, and greasy meals. On a mental level, practice mindfulness and avoid information overload to maintain clarity and focus. Snakes’ tendency to overthink can sometimes delay decision-making, so staying grounded is essential.

The Wood element promotes kindness, compassion, healing, and medicine, while the Snake’s reflective nature encourages nurturing both mind and body. The year 2025 presents an ideal opportunity to adopt mindful practices such as meditation or acupuncture. If you’ve been considering incorporating Chinese Medicine into your life, this is the perfect time to start a routine of acupuncture or herbal treatments.

As we move through the Year of the Snake, focus on fostering resilience by strengthening your immune system and cultivating harmony in all aspects of life. Embrace the transformative energy of the year, and allow it to guide you toward growth, balance, and renewal.
